The Official Guide to the Best Burger in Albuquerque

The Official Guide to the Best Burger in Albuquerque

What makes the best burger in Albuquerque the best? Is it the crisp, cooked-to-perfection patty, the appropriately weighted layering of toppings, or is that fabulous New Mexican flare of roasted green chile? Whatever your heart desires, the fun, eclectic restaurants of Albuquerque (smasher spots, retired small-town diners, and large-scale gastropubs) deliver a special burger for every type of palate. Whether you like your burger thin and crispy with a beautifully caramelized crust or thick and juicy with a universe of toppings, the Duke City has something for you. Here at Wyoming Place, Albuquerques premier apartment community, we love to help our residents find new and exciting restaurants around the city. Thats why weve compiled this list of our favorite burger spots in Albuquerque.

But First: What Makes A Good Burger?

So first, before we take our tour, let's discuss what makes a good burger for good. Some believe it should be something you can never recreate, while others boast that when the seasoning, patty, toppings, and bun arrive at an even balance, one reaches good burger nirvana. A good burger seal of approval is also when no one else in the world challenges your memory of it for days (well, others in the same city might, as this one is only good in comparison). When a guest bites into a green chile cheeseburger in Albuquerque, they know it's something else entirely. Why? Because the green chile here is flame-roasted to perfection, seasoned out the wazoo, and perfectly presented thanks to New Mexico's hot, smoky desert climate.

Your Ultimate Burger Tour In Albuquerque

Monte Carlo Steakhouse: The Smoky, Old-School Champion

For some locals, the Albuquerque green chile cheeseburger is found at the Monte Carlo Steakhouse, a hole in the wall behind a liquor store on Route 66. It's an old-timey steakhouse and DDD-champ from Food Network that boasts a 1/2 pound ground sirloin burger charred with bits of roasted green chiles and melted cheddar cheese. The warm skin-on fries are an ideal complement. What makes this burger most satisfying is the meat, the actual burger itself: well-seasoned here and there with some umami-spiced char and griddle mastery, but the star is the quality of the chile, the smoky flavor (with a bit of a kick but not overpowering) to elevate it. The steakhouse is a nostalgic experience with dark wood finishes and tavern-like history.

Best for: Purists in need of an old-school version of a green chile cheeseburger where meat and the chile shine as stars.

Frontier Restaurant: The University Staple

Just blocks away from the University of New Mexico is Frontier Restaurant, an Albuquerque staple since 1971 and open 5 AM to midnight every day of the week to serve thousands wanting their Fiesta Burger (green chile cheeseburger with lettuce and onion) and all that it entails. Cooked fresh on the grill, a grilled egg and melted cheese add richness to the presentation. A Food Network champ from Man v. Food Nation, Frontier prides itself on its speed and quality, particularly because of five dining rooms filled with John Wayne headshots and Western-themed decor. Diners can't afford to miss out on the sweet roll or good hand-cut fries that come with every order.

Best for: A fast-paced experience, in a collegiate sector, for incredible energy while enjoying your favorite burger.

Lindy's Diner: Route 66 Time Machine

Since 1929, Lindy's Diner hasn't skipped a beat as the longest-running restaurant on Historic Route 66. A recently aired Food Network recommendation, this quaint downtown diner serves hand-formed burgers made to order with real skin-on fries. For some review bloggers, Lindy's boasts the best green chile burger ever (and it's quite impressive considering how hard it is to find quality green chile burgers elsewhere outside of Albuquerque!) The classic diner has counter seating and diverse diners for anyone nostalgic for a good time. For those who want to experiment, try their Cowboy Burger (bacon, onion ring, cheese, and BBQ) or Greek Burger (feta cheese, gyro meat, and tzatziki).

Best for: Nostalgic diners who appreciate history with unique takes on burger standards.
